An exhibition of the architect Elissa Aalto‘s life’s work opens at Galleria Nuovo in Lahti in August. The exhibition on 23.8–1.10.2023 launches Lahti Architecture Week. This marks the 150th anniversary of Eliel Saarinen’s birth, Alvar Aalto’s 125th anniversary, and the centenary of Elissa Aalto, who was born in 1922.

The exhibition presents the life’s work of this talented, determined designer, who is relatively unknown to the general public. Elissa Aalto worked alongside Aalto, and then continued his work, for a total of 45 years. She took charge of completing Lahti’s Church of the Cross (1969–79), which had been on the drawing board for a long time, and devised the finishing touches. The touring exhibition marking Elissa Aalto’s centenary has previously been shown in four Alvar Aalto cities; Rovaniemi, Alajärvi, Tammisaari and Oulu. The exhibition, produced by the Alvar Aalto Foundation, is part of the Alvar Aalto 125 anniversary year programme.
