Join us now for the 16th Alvar Aalto Symposium – THE WEIGHT OF ARCHITECTURE

Two days, three themes, with presentations on: the ENVIRONMENT, RESOURCES, and ARCHITECTURE. Leading international and Finnish speakers, discussions, networking, an unmissable side programme, and Aalto’s architecture set amidst wonderful lake scenery in Jyväskylä, Finland.

The main themes have emerged from the topical phenomena of global crises; climate change, extreme weather conditions and the loss of biodiversity to the political, financial and societal changes in our environment. Check the programme HERE.

What is the role of architecture and design amidst ecological crises, catastrophes and political upheaval? Can design make a difference, solve problems, and bring any radical change for the better? How much does architecture weigh when the future of the entire planet is at stake?

The Alvar Aalto Symposium is an international discussion forum for contemporary architecture and environmental issues. Our aim is to stimulate critical, problem-solving and future-looking discussion on topical environmental, social, artistic and technical challenges facing society.

WHEN AND WHERE?

The 16th Alvar Aalto Symposium 22.-23.8.2024 is a hybrid event, onsite in Jyväskylä, Finland, and virtual for a large international audience around the world. The traditional onsite venue is the main building of the University of Jyväskylä (Alvar Aalto, 1955).

The 15th Alvar Aalto Medal will also be awarded during the symposium. An exhibition by the new medallist will be shown at the Aalto2 Museum Centre until the end of 2024. This internationally prestigious architecture prize is awarded jointly by the Alvar Aalto Foundation, Finnish Association of Architects SAFA, Museum of Finnish Architecture, Finnish Architectural Society and the City of Helsinki.

The versatile 2-day programme includes the seminar together with side events, such as architectural excursions, exhibitions and various public events. Full programme will be published during the spring.

Within the framework of the Alvar Aalto Academy brand, the aim of the Alvar Aalto Foundation is to raise critical and future-looking discussion about the built environment and design. The Alvar Aalto Academy (founded 1999) fosters training, research and events on modern architecture and design in Finland and abroad.

The purpose of the Alvar Aalto Foundation (founded 1968) is to work for the benefit of architecture as an art form, especially by taking into account the works and goals of Alvar Aalto. The Alvar Aalto Foundation conserves archive material regarding Alvar Aalto as well as his spiritual legacy and acts as an international information centre for his architecture and design works.
