The 4th International Alvar Aalto Researchers´ Network Seminar will take place live in Pori, Finland, and on virtual platform in May 67, 2021.

The keynote speakers of the seminar are architect, Ph.D Antonello Alici, architect, FAIA, F.US Gunny Harboe, architect SAFA Tapani Mustonen and architect SAFA Teemu Tuomi along with 40 presentations from the authors of the Call for papers. The full programme will be published in January 2021.

The Seminar’s theme, (EVER)GREEN ALVAR AALTO, prompts us to ponder from a variety of perspectives the different aspects of Alvar Aalto’s architectural production, working methods and architectural thinking, and their relevance to the architectural design and culture of the 2020s.

The theme can be approached from pragmatic, theoretical, metaphorical or cultural viewpoints, which are particularly relevant when we are talking about the future of buildings:

  • How can Alvar Aalto’s architecture and design be regarded as being sustainable?
  • How does Alvar Aalto’s architecture resonate in other architectural contexts?
  • How is sustainability addressed in restoration/reuse projects in buildings of the Aalto era?

The seminar registration is now open and the early bird tickets available until March 31, 2021 from the web shop of the event.

The event is produced in collaboration with Alvar Aalto Academy, the City of Pori, and other partners. The event is also a collaboration project of the Network of Alvar Aalto Cities, established in 2017. The seminar has previously been organized three times: 2012 in Seinäjoki, 2015 in Rovaniemi and 2017 in Jyväskylä.

The Alvar Aalto Researchers´ Network is an international collaboration that serves as a channel for discussion and cooperation between people doing research on Alvar Aalto. The Network helps to highlight research topics of interest for Aalto research dealing with Alvar Aalto and his architect’s office’s production and related subject areas.

Covid-19 info
We hope that by May 2021 the Covid-19 restrictions will no longer be in place, and travel will resume normally. In any case, the virtual dimension of the seminar will enable worldwide participation.
