Alvar Aalto Week in Jyväskylä in August is a new kind of urban happening. This interactive, multi-artistic environment. Alvar Aalto Week will include guided tours, multi-artistic performances, exhibitions, lectures and all sorts of surprises. Entry to the Alvar Aalto Museum will be free for the entire week.

The programme for Alvar Aalto Week will be primarily in Finnish, but some events will be in English. The international audience will, for instance, have a chance to go on English-language guided tours and view the Alvar Aalto Museum’s exhibitions and extensive archive.

Architect Lene Hammer will give a lecture on renovating Aalto’s buildings: “The Renovation and Extension of Alvar Aalto Buildings – Case Presentation of Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg, Denmark”. Visitors on the KoeAalto guided tour with dancer Helena Ratinen will experience Aalto’s architecture, as well as details of surfaces and shapes, through the language of movement. During the week, refreshments will be available in the cafés in Aalto’s buildings, at the Alvar Aalto Museum, Säynätsalo Town Hall and Muurame Church.

During Alvar Aalto Week, Jyväskylä will also host the 14th International Alvar Aalto Symposium on the theme “New Housing Solutions for Cities in Change”.  The weekend will culminate in the inaugural Aalto Open House event. This will provide a unique opportunity to take a look into residential buildings designed by Alvar Aalto in Jyväskylä when the residents open the doors to their private homes.
