We asked him to design something Finnish, but something in the spirit of the times.
The clients’ wish came true, right down to the smallest details. The Villa Mairea is full of details where the Finnish vernacular building tradition is combined with a modern vocabulary of form. The Villa Mairea entrance is startling: it consists of an entirely free-form canopy supported on two columns, a single concrete column and a composite timber column, with walls made of slender vertical timber poles with the bark left on and some bushes (ornamental flowering raspberry, Rubus odora).
