NEW WAVE, the international Alvar Aalto Design Seminar, will bring together top experts in the field for the seventh time in Jyväskylä on August 24–25, 2013. This year, the Design Seminar will be chaired by one of Finland’s internationally best-known contemporary designers, Harri Koskinen.

“To our minds, the term ‘new wave’ combines the heyday of French cinema in the 1950s and 60s with the emergence of new-wave music and punk at the end of the 1970s. Both looked for uncompromising, experimental, boundary-breaking modes of presentation without regard to existing styles. NEW WAVE is now looking for the new wave in design,” is how Koskinen sums up his choice of seminar configuration.

The Alvar Aalto Design Seminar was set up as a discussion forum to keep alive the spirit of the functional and ecological design principles represented by Alvar Aalto. Since 1995, this triennial design seminar has alternated between The Alvar Aalto Meetings on Modern Architecture and the Alvar Aalto Symposium.

The event is arranged by the Alvar Aalto Museum and Alvar Aalto Academy. Previous design seminars have been chaired by prominent figures including interior architects Sari Anttonen and Simo Heikkilä and designer Timo Salli.

The language of the event is English.
