The 80th anniversary year of the Aalto stool has begun in Cologne, Germany. A joint exhibition STOOL 60 BY AALTO arranged by the Alvar Aalto Museum and Artek presents the stool and its history during the week of 14.–21.1.2013 at the Ungers Archiv für Architekturwissenschaft.
Aalto’s three-legged, stackable Stool 60, first shown to the public in 1933, is a classic of functional furniture design. “It epitomizes Aalto’s simple, ascetic form language,” Chief Curator Kaarina Mikonranta of the Alvar Aalto Museum says of this stool that has now reached such a venerable age.
Later in the spring, the stool will also arrive in Finland. A Stool Makes History, an exhibition curated for the anniversary year, will open in the gallery at the Alvar Aalto Museum in Jyväskylä in May.
