The Aira building was the first large apartment block in the city of Jyväskylä, and also the first housing company. The sober facade prefigures Aalto’s Rationalist apartment blocks from the 1930s, but is given character by subtle details, such as the Pompeiian colouring of the eaves, spiralling downspouts and specially designed lanterns in the doorways.
