The Royal Institute of British Architects, RIBA, has given a prize to the architect Dr Harry Charrington for his work on Alvar Aalto. The RIBA President’s Award for Outstanding University-located Research is intended “to promote and champion high-quality research and encourage its dissemination and incorporation into the knowledge base of the profession”. The award ceremony will be held in Bath, UK, on December 5.

Harry Charrington worked in the Alvar Aalto & Co. architects’ office in the 1980s. He has studied the work of the office, especially by interviewing other architects who worked there.

The Award has been given in recognition of Charrington’s years of research, which have resulted in several publications about Alvar Aalto, his design methods, and the working ethos in Aalto’s office. Charrington describes these in a volume co-edited with the architect Vezio Nava: Alvar Aalto, the mark of the hand, published in 2011.
