The Florence of the North. Alvar Aalto’s Architecture in Jyväskylä 29.9.2017 – 4.3.2018


SUPPLEMENTARY PROGRAMME

Bring a friend to the exhibition and get to know your home town. During the Tell a Friend about your Town campaign over the opening weekend (30.9 – 1.10) and the autumn holiday week (week 42) two people can go to Museum for the price of one. Entrance is free for those under 18 and holders of Museum cards.

To spice up your autumn holiday on Friday 20.10 from 12.00 to 15.00, there will be a non-stop workshop entitled ‘Greetings from the Florence of the North’ that will be open to all. It will be free-of-charge and will be held in the URBS workshop space.

LECTURES AND TOURS
The supplementary programme will be opened on Thursday 12.10. with a lecture entitled ‘Aalto and Jyväskylä’ given by the director of the Alvar Aalto Foundation, Tommi Lindh, between 16.30 and 18.30. Bring your own photos of Aalto’s Jyväskylä buildings, your own opinions and your own anecdotes about them. After the lecture, the public will be able to ask questions, show photographs and share anecdotes with others.

On Wednesday 8.11, starting at 16.30, architect Jonas Malmberg of the Alvar Aalto Foundation, and Pirjo Vuorinen, head of museum activities at the University of Jyväskylä Open Science Centre/Science Museum will show us the newly renovated main building of the University, the University Library and Lozzi. During the tour, you will be welcome to ask questions and make comments. The tour will start in front of the main building of the University at 16.30.

GUIDED TOURS FOR THE PUBLIC
These tours will expand on the themes of the exhibition under the guidance of experts.

On Thursday 26.10.17, from 16.30 to 17.00, Chief Curator Katariina Pakoma will introduce the young Aalto’s Neo-Classical visions together with his built works.

On Friday 24.11.17, from 16.30 to 17.00, Exhibition Curator Mari Murtoniemi will present the Jyväskylä local government area and the history of its design and construction.

On Friday 19.1.18, from 16.30 to 17.00, Curator of Drawings Archives Timo Riekko will take an in-depth look at Alvar Aalto’s un-built works together with some of his lesser-known buildings in Jyväskylä.

Entry to lectures and guided tours is free of charge.

At the beginning of December, there will be a weekend of special events on 8.12 and 9.12 that will include workshops, tours and lectures. This will also mark the beginning of ‘Christmas shopping’ at the Museum Shop where there will be hot glögi and a range of original gift ideas and special offers.

At the exhibition, you can also take a look at Aalto’s buildings with the ‘Tourist in Jyväskylä’ map dating from 1952, using the Aurasma mobile phone application.
