This autumn’s opening exhibition at the Alvar Aalto Museum is showing visual art by the architect Sakari Laitinen (1937−2015). Laitinen’s collage-like works combine an architectural approach with experimental play with materials.

 

This exhibition of colourful, spatial works showcases a cavalcade of pieces by this adept at architecture and visual art, all marked by inspired experiments with and a quest for something new. Always gifted at drawing, Laitinen practised art and architecture side by side from his student years onwards. He was widely influential on the architectural scene and on retirement devoted himself entirely to art. Laitinen’s works have been shown in numerous exhibitions in Finland and abroad.

The show has been produced by the Museum of Finnish Architecture and curated by Juhani Pallasmaa, Sara Nuortie and Mikael Merenmies. The hanging was devised by the architect Juhani Pallasmaa. The exhibition was shown at the Museum of Finnish Architecture in Helsinki in spring 2017.

The show will be opened at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, 26 September 2018 by Interim Director of the Museum of Finnish Architecture Reetta Heiskanen.

The supplementary programme includes workshops and audience events. The exhibition publication, Line, space and colour. Constructions by Sakari Laitinen produced by the Museum of Finnish Architecture and Building Information, will be on sale in the Alvar Aalto Museum’s Alvar Aalto Shop throughout the exhibition period.
