5. Alvar Aalto Researchers' Network Seminar – Whose Modernism? 14.–15.6.2023 Aalto2, Jyväskylä, Finland

The seminar in June was arranged at the new Aalto2 Museum Centre in Jyväskylä. The new museum hub combines two Alvar Aalto-designed edifices, the Museum of Central Finland (1956–61, 1991) and the Alvar Aalto Museum (1971–73).

The museum hub’s major opening exhibition Ihmisen jäljet – maailmanperintöä / Human Traces – World Heritage takes up world-heritage themes ranging from Aalto’s architecture to the Finnish sauna tradition. The public can learn about the local cultural heritage in the Museum of Central Finland’s permanent exhibition Exploring Central Finland. The Alvar Aalto Museum’s new main exhibition AALTO – Work and Life introduces Aalto’s production and the ideas behind his design to constantly new target audiences. The exhibitions and tour at the Aalto2 museum hub are included at the additional programme of the seminar.

In Jyväskylä, the city of lakes and hills in the heart of Central Finland, Finnish Lakeland, you’ll find the largest number of masterful buildings in the whole world designed by the world-famous architect and academician Alvar Aalto. The impressive portfolio of 29 locations includes, for instance, the Alvar Aalto Museum, Muurame Church and Säynätsalo Town Hall, which is regarded as one of Aalto’s finest works.
