The project develops a method for monitoring the effects of climate change on cultural heritage sites, especially on built heritage. The method can be used in sites and buildings of different ages and types, in different parts of Finland.
The basis of the development of the monitoring method is the identification of the characteristics and values of the sites, as well as the risks related to environmental and climatic conditions. In addition to the monitoring method, the project provides new information about the effects of climate change on cultural heritage in Finland. The information it produces can be used in the planning of cultural heritage protection, methods and practical adaptation measures, which also enables national guidance.
The information produced by the project can also be used in the research of other fields and science. The project offers further development opportunities to extend the methods to other operational environments as well as to develop the management of adaptation measures. The project investigates the importance of appropriate materials and methods for maintenance and preservation. The objective of the project is also to form a network of experts that works to promote the identification and monitoring of the effects of climate risks on cultural heritage. In the project, a program is scheduled to create the network and define its operation.
