Marko Ahtisaari, Executive Vice President of Design at Nokia, has confirmed his participation in this year’s Alvar Aalto Design Seminar. The seventh Alvar Aalto design seminar, NEW WAVE, is being held in Jyväskylä 24–25 August 2013. As in recent years, hundreds of design professionals, students and enthusiasts from around the world are expected to attend.
Apart from Ahtisaari, also speaking will be Artek Design Director Ville Kokkonen, International Herald Tribune design critic Alice Rawsthorn and Dutch designer Ineke Hans. Renowned Muji designer Sam Hecht, the CEO of Established & Sons Maurizio Mussati, and someone widely recognized for his communal projects in the developing countries, Stephen Burks, will also give lectures at the Seminar.
Chairing the Design Seminar will be Harri Koskinen. The choice of lecturers and the theme bear Koskinen’s imprint.
Visitor’s to this year’s design seminar can visit the A Stool Makes History anniversary exhibition produced by the Alvar Aalto Museum. The exhibition shows the 80-year lifespan of the classic Alvar Aalto-designed stool. The exhibition is open to the public in the Alvar Aalto Museum Gallery in Jyväskylä 16 May–8 September 2013.
The international Design Seminar, held every three years, was set up as a discussion forum to keep alive the spirit of the functional and ecological design principle represented by Alvar Aalto. The first seminar, Design for Architecture, was in 1995.
The event is arranged by the Alvar Aalto Museum and Academy.
