The year of exhibitions at Studio Aalto will come to an end with the architect Olli Lehtovuori’s photographic exhibition Northern nature. The fascinating photographs explore the close relationship between nature and architecture. The exhibition will be open to the public from 25 November 2014 to 31 January 2015, at Studio Aalto in Helsinki.

The photographs captured in the northern coniferous forest areas have been categorised by four natural features. These thematic features are forest, river, rock and lake. The earliest photographs were taken on Lehtovuori’s kayaking trips, back in the 1970s.

“Photography and nature have always been close to my heart. When taking photographs, I often study the similarity between architecture and nature. Many of the photographs of Finnish nature were taken on my kayaking trips in the Archipelago Sea and the lake district. My trips to northern Russia and, for example, the Kola peninsula, and the photographs taken there, are also an important part of the exhibition as a whole”, says Lehtovuori.

Lehtovuori, who specialises in social housing, has worked for his own architecture company and, for example, the Ministry of the Environment. In his student days, he also worked at Alvar Aalto’s regional planning office in Rovaniemi.

The exhibitions at Studio Aalto highlight the architecture and design of architects who worked at Alvar Aalto’s office, or the work of Alvar Aalto himself, through currently relevant themes. Lehtovuori’s exhibition is the third to be presented this year.
