PARTNERS

City of Jyväskylä

With its population of over 140 000, Jyväskylä is a bold and appealing city located in the heart of Finnish Lakeland. Jyväskylä is well known as a lively student city with a strong sports culture as well as a venue for a wide variety of events. In this resource-wise capital city of Alvar Aalto’s architecture, the pulse of the city and the proximity of nature combine in a manner rarely encountered.

Academy of Finland
Strategic Research Council (SRC)

The Strategic Research Council (SRC) at the Academy of Finland funds high-quality research that has great societal impact. The research consortia funded by the SRC should seek to find concrete solutions to grand challenges that require multidisciplinary approaches. An important element of such research is active and ongoing collaboration between those who produce new knowledge and those who use it. Three SRC consortia contributing to the 14th Alvar Aalto Symposium; Dwellers in Agile Cities (DAC), Urbanisation, mobilities and immigration (URMI) and Beyond MALPE coordination: integrative envisioning (BEMINE), are funded under the programm Urbanising Society. Research under this theme is aimed at increasing understanding of urbanisation and its impacts on the interaction between cities and regions and on the vitality of regions.

Dwellers in Agile Cities project (DAC) recognizes future living needs and creates solutions for improving social urban development, with particular interest on experiments and innovation, new partnership formations, hybrid housing solutions and flexible ideas about collaboration. Through local experimental cases, DAC identifies novel opportunities to increase the possibilities of dwellers to use the city as a resource for their needs, businesses and activities. The cases are translated into flexible practices that are scalable and applicable more widely in the society.

The research project Urbanization, Mobilities and Immigration (URMI) analyzes the drivers and future paths of urbanization, the promotion of urban sustainability and resource
efficiency, and the impact of immigration on urbanization, especially in the largest urban regions in Finland. Mobilities and immigration are themes that cut through all URMI’s multidisciplinary research activities. URMI tackles the research themes utilizing quantitative, qualitative, participatory and foresight methods.

Beyond MALPE-coordination: Integrative Envisioning (BEMINE) aims to develop city region planning towards more integrative and sustainable direction. It provides new knowledge about Finnish urbanization processes, and develops models and tools for strategic and integrative development of city regions together with multiple stakeholders. The goal is to find answers to questions what is the role of informal agreement-based processes in tomorrow’s planning system and what are the roles of governance, cooperation networks and citizens in creating sustainable city regions.
