The Building - Restoration - Exhibition - Help Viipuri Library Alvar Aalto's Viipuri Library is presented in its original form in a touring exhibition. The intention of this exhibition is to publicize the library restoration project and collect funds for its implementation. The exhibition has been so designed that it is easy to mount and transport and can be adapted to suit different spaces. It consists of 12 free-standing panels displaying enlarged photographs and working drawings, plus fascinating written and pictorial documents which show the design process of the library. The main attraction is a 1:50 scale model showing the room layout of the building. Examples of the furniture originally used in the library are also on show. The exhibition requires a total space of approx. 100 m² and a large van is sufficient for transportation. The architectural themes of the library are reflected in the construction of the exhibition stands. The varying heights of the panels correspond to the differing levels of the library interiors, the perforated roof panels refer to the skylights of the lending and reading rooms, and the form of the undulating wall panel reflects that of the acoustic ceiling of the auditorium. In the exhibition, a touch of the original feeling of the library is achieved by samples of the materials that were used originally. Aalto used many different kinds of wood in the library. The exhibition is accompanied by a brochure introducing the restoration project and describing the current state of the renovations.
