FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN TO SAVE ALVAR AALTO LIBRARY IN VYBORG

The Finnish Committee for the Restoration of Viipuri Library, one of Alvar Aalto's most famous buildings, has commissioned Gaetano Pesce to produce a limited number of unique sculptures to be sold in order to raise funds for the restoration of the library.
Because of his world-wide renown as an artist, with outstanding achievements in architecture and design, Gaetano Pesce was a perfect choice for the Committee, who had a two-fold intention: to find an object which would be easy to market, and to draw international attention to the critical condition of Viipuri Library.
Gaetano Pesce is also known for using innovative techniques and new materials in his work. He has created wonderful furniture and other pieces for interior decoration made out of plastic. All of these are unique items which vary in form and colour.
Pesce's Viipuri Library sculpture series is made of flexible polychrome resin. The building is represented in a distorted form, symbolising its present poor condition; as has often been said, one picture is worth a thousand words.
