Maison Louis Carré will be open to the public from August
Maison Louis Carré was designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto for the French art dealer and collector Louis Carré. The house was completed in 1959 and the swimming pool in 1963. This masterpiece of modern architecture, combining buildings, garden, furniture and interior design in a total work of art, is Aaltos only remaining building in France and one of his most remarkable private villas.
AAfter Louis Carrés death in 1977, this brilliant home of art and culture went to his widow Olga, who lived there until she passed away in 2002. It has thus always been in private ownership and has remarkably preserved most of Aaltos interior fittings, furniture, lamps etc. The building and the garden have been protected by French heritage law as a Monument historique since 1996. The house is now owned by the Association Alvar Aalto en France, which is restoring the house. It will be open to the public and host seminars on architecture and design.
