Andrew MacMillan

Andy MacMillan is the Emeritus Professor of Architecture in Glasgow University and the former head of the Mackintosh School of Architecture in the Glasgow School of Art, Mackintosh's Masterwork. Until 1988 he was also a Senior Partner in the well known architectural firm of Gillespie Kidd and Coia. The practice lay mainly in the field of educational and religious buildings for which they received numerous awards including the Royal Gold Medal.

He was architect to Wadham College, Oxford for twenty years, and with his partner Isi Metzstein responsible for the only complete new college built in Cambridge in the 20th Century. A touring exhibition of the firms work is currently in progress.

As an Architect and Teacher Professor MacMillan has lectured in many Universities and Schools of Architecture across the world, from Yale where he was Davenport Professor to Osaka. He was an advisor and examiner to The Vaasa Architecture Live for the RIBA and was RIBA Vice President for Education for a number of years.

Much of his teaching has been centred on contextual buildings and urban studies. He wrote and presented the BBC series on Scottish Burghs and has made regular appearances on Television in connection with Architectural issues.

He is a regular member of judging panels and competitions ranging from the choice of Architect (Enric Miralles) for the new Scottish Parliament Building to a recent new town in China.

He has written much about Mackintosh and about Scottish and Urban issues and Architects and he was the consultant Architect for the building of Mackintosh's House for an Art Lover in1990 which is now an out station of the Glasgow School of Art.

Currently he practices as an Architectural Consultant and is an advisor to the Scottish Executive.
