International workshop of architectural education Jyväskylä Finland Anne Taylor, Tutor of the workshop  Anne Taylor, Ph.D., and Hon. AIA is a professor of Architecture and Planning at the University of New Mexico where she directs the Institute for Environmental Education and specializes in Architecture and Design for Children. Author of many books and articles on learning environment design, research and development, she is also President of School Zone Institute and Anne Taylor Associates. With colleagues she has written a core curriculum Architecture and Children plus Southwest and Northwest supplements with which she trains teachers to teach architecture and design to children. This curriculum has been translated into Spanish and Japanese and is being widely used by children in Japan. The architectural workshop, organised for the fourth time now, concentrates this year on architectural education for children with the theme “A Space between the Urban Environment and Nature; working with Children”. The workshop partly coincides with the Alvar Aalto Symposium. The event is jointly organised by the Alvar Aalto Museum and the City of Jyväskylä. Sixteen architects from twelve different countries will participate in the workshop. They come from England, Scotland, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Poland, Turkey, Sweden, Denmark, Japan and Finland. The invited project leader is Anne Taylor, Professor of Architecture and Planning and an expert on children's architectural education from the United States. Taylor is Director of the Institute for Environmental Education at the University of New Mexico. She has participated in developing new learning environments for children and taught architecture and design to children for many years. She is also the author of several books and articles on the subject. A two-day architectural course for children will be held at the university campus on July 30-31, 2003 in connection with the workshop. In addition to the architects, a group of forty children from Jyväskylän Normaalikoulu lower secondary level will be investigating the margins between the built environment and nature. The participants of the course will be divided into four age groups: 6-7 years, 8-9 years, 10-11 years and 12-13 years. Each group will have at least one Finnish tutor in addition to the tutors from abroad. The architecture course for children offers expert and innovative architectural education for the pupils of the school. They can expect new experiences in studying the built environment in an international atmosphere, joy of learning and the possibility to use foreign languages if they so wish. The University of Jyväskylä is an unofficial co-organiser of the children's architecture course. Jyväskylän Normaalikoulu lower secondary level will participate in the children's architecture course by documenting the course for the school's own uses. A group of three students from the University of Jyväskylä, Department of Art and Culture Studies, will also prepare a follow-up report on the course. Jo neljättä kertaa järjestettävä arkkitehtuuriworkshop keskittyy tänä vuonna lapsille suunnattuun arkkitehtuurikasvatukseen teemalla “A Space between Urban and Nature; working with Children”. Workshop pidetään osittain päällekkäin Alvar Aalto Symposiumin kanssa. Tapahtuman organisoi Alvar Aalto Akatemia yhteistyössä Alvar Aalto -museon kanssa. Jyväskylän kaupunki tukee hanketta taloudellisesti. Workshoppiin osallistuu 16 arkkitehtia kahdestatoista eri maasta. Osallistujat tulevat Englannista, Skotlannista, Ranskasta, Saksasta Hollannista, Italiasta, Puolasta, Turkista, Ruotsista, Tanskasta, Japanista ja Suomesta. Projektin vetäjäksi on kutsuttu amerikkalainen lasten arkkitehtuurikasvatuksen professori Anne Taylor. Taylor toimii ympäristökasvatusinstituutin johtajana New Mexicon yliopistossa. Hän on ollut kehittämässä uusia oppimisympäristöjä ja opettanut arkkitehtuuria ja muotoilua lapsille jo vuosien ajan sekä julkaissut useita kirjoja ja artikkeleita. Workshopin yhteydessä järjestetään yliopiston kampusalueella 30.-31.7. 2003 kaksipäiväinen lapsille suunnattu arkkitehtuurikurssi. Rakennetun ympäristön ja luonnon välisten rajatilojen tutkimiseen osallistuvat eri maista tulleiden arkkitehtien lisäksi 6-13 -vuotiaat lapset, jotka ovat Jyväskylän Normaalikoulun ala-asteen oppilaita. Kurssilaiset jaetaan työskentelemään neljään ikäryhmään: 6-7 -vuotiaat, 8-9 -vuotiaat, 10-11-vuotiaat ja 12-13 -vuotiaat lapset. Jokaisella ryhmällä tulee olemaan ulkomaalaisten ohjaajien lisäksi vähintään yksi suomalainen ohjaaja. Kurssi tarjoaa koulun oppilaille tasokasta ja innovatiivista arkkitehtuurikasvatusta. Oppilaille on luvassa rakennetun ympäristön tutkimiseen liittyviä elämyksiä kansainvälisessä ilmapiirissä, oppimisen iloa ja mahdollisuus käyttää halutessaan vieraita kieliä. Jyväskylän yliopisto on mukana epävirallisena yhteistyötahona lasten arkkitehtuurikurssin toteuttamisessa. Normaalikoulun ala-aste osallistuu lasten arkkitehtuurikurssiin dokumentoimalla kurssia koulun omaan käyttöön. Lisäksi Jyväskylän yliopiston Taiteiden ja kulttuurin tutkimuksen laitokselta kolmen opiskelijan ryhmä tekee kurssista seurantaraportin. Lasten kurssitöitä on esillä näyttelyssä, jonka avajaiset pidetään Kampusalueella 31.7. klo 17 alkaen.
