Call for papers
In addition to presentations by the invited speakers, contributions were sought for eighteen thematic Pecha Kucha presentations, six for each theme. The presentations are based on previously contributed papers. These papers can be scientific texts, but they can also be combinations of design/planning project presentations and analytical texts, according to the principles of research by design. The themes of the meeting and of the presentation papers are as follows:
Selected papers and project presentations:
Theme 1 | R&D
Research and development is a concept rarely used in architecture. It is, however, useful for describing the creation of boundary-stretching methods and ideas, blending theory, experiments and practice. We have presentations and discussions on provocative action, projective practices, collaborative design methods, innovative social networking and radical thought, surpassing traditional categories.
In particular, we will discuss the topic 'research by design', which includes innovative design methodologies contributing to research, practice-based inquiry, the study of design attitudes, and testing by design. The inputs in this category will also regard high-rise building as a specific R&D activity.

Theme 2 | Shuffle
Beyond construction, biological, and economical sustainability, there is the sustainability of densification and optimisation. This theme will address infill, for example in the form of high-rise building. More and more urban development takes place in between existing urban nodes instead of as expansion of the outer periphery zones. Here, a high-rise tower could be a key tool in efficient infill building. However, there are also other perspectives and devices for infill, which belong to this theme.
High-rise building is also taking place in between scales: the building scale and the urban scale. We will also focus on this residual area where architecture and urban design melt together. Skyscrapers are often micro-cities. What is, then, the relationship between urban outdoor areas and towers, the public and the private? What could it be? In this social perspective, a tower contains potential for social sustainability: tolerance and diversity. Simultaneously, we would like to open up discussion on other types of hybrid solutions and their qualitative requirements in urban development.

Theme 3 | Tower
This theme considers towers as architectural objects of design and organisation. What are the parameters of high-rise buildings? What is your mental image of a high-rise tower? Aggressive? Irresponsible? Why do high-rise buildings often have an unattractive and even inhuman flavour? How could we increase the attractiveness of tower buildings? Is this an impossible task? A high-rise is a device for spatial optimisation, creating peaks of density. Is it possible to develop better high-rise typologies? Is there the potential for a friendly skyscraper? How could changeability, responsiveness and experimentation be incorporated into high-rises? Is there a possibility for spontaneous changes and permutations in tower building?
The development of high-rise building could be divided into two areas: the project development stage and the design stage. How could both of these areas be improved? This means creating better methods for programming towers as well as designing towers with friendly, softer associations.
