One of the characteristics of furniture designed by Alvar Aalto is its adaptability; many different chairs can be produced from one basic model. Different combinations of arms and legs, 'jouset' (springs) and 'kehät' (rings), have proved to be ideally suited to this kind of variation.

In this particular model, the wide 'springs' have been given a plushy seat cushion, backrest and wings. This chair, which has more in common with the classic English club armchair than Aalto's usual lighter style, sold better in England than anywhere else.
