Sacristy bench Aalto Museum collection / deposited by the Museum of Central Finland Designer: Alvar Aalto Designed: 1929 Maker: Muurame huonekalutehdas Muuramme Church was designed in 1926-1927 and, in those days, Aalto was still conforming with the ideals of the strict Classical revival. Indeed, the furniture and light fittings in the church were fairly austere in their form. Nevertheless, they are not in conflict with the church building itself, but the building and the interiors together form a harmonic overall unit. Originally the church pews were painted black, but at the request of the congregation, the colour was changed a few tears later. At the same time the dark blue (?or black) vaulted roof was painted in a lighter colour, too. How the designer reacted to the issue is not known. The interior of the church was renewed in its entirety in 1979. |
