Besides the building itself, many of Alvar Aalto's commissions also included the interior design work. Sometimes this also called for entirely new pieces of furniture.

This generously shaped chair was conceived in conjunction with the design work for the National Pensions Institute. They were used in the conference rooms and lounges, for example. Two different bending methods were used for the wooden parts: the front legs are 'fan-shaped' legs (1954) and 'macaroni bends' are used for the other wooden parts. This new method of bending wood was used rather rarely. Nevertheless, the easy chairs for the Maison Carré, a private residence for a French art-collector (1956-58), were made in the same way.
